HEAVY RESCUE CERTIFICATION !

West End Officers with Mahanoy City Mayor Krall, Seanator Rhoades, Rep Goodman, accepting the certification from EMS Council.

The photo on right is the sticker after being placed on Rescue 993.

After nearly two years of planning, countless of hours of training, and upgrading equipment, Rescue 993 is now certifed by the Eastern PA EMS Council as a Heavy Rescue. The unit was inspected over a nearly six hour period and passed with flying colors. We are only one of two rescue units in Schuylkill County to acheive this status. The other being Yorkville Rescue 63 of Pottsville. There are only a handful of companies in the this EMS region that are certifed.

2008 OFFICER CHANGES

At the January 2008 Company Meeting, the 2008 Company and Line Officers were sworn in. There are a few changes to our leaders. Congratulations to Barry Brassington Jr., who is the new Captain. He replaces Jack Pollack, who was Captain for the past 30 plus years. The company would like to thank Jack for his dedication and sacrifices to the West End. Renee Unruh is the new Company Tresurer, replacing John Honus Sr., who resigned to spend more time with his family. John had been our treasurer for the past 25 years. We would like to thank him for his  outstanding management of company funds and finances. Joe Swantek is our new Trustee, replacing Barry Brassington Jr. who resigned to devote more time to his newly appointed Captain's role. At the Spring 2008 line officers meeting, Kathy Gavala was promoted to lieutenant, filling the vacant spot.

PAYING TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE!

On Sunday, October 7th, the  Schuylkill County Volunteer Firefighters Association and the Schuylkill Historical Fire Society held its annual Firefighters Memorial Service and Fire Apparatus Muster on the County Fire School Grounds. Hundreds attendend the day long event, which also included live fire/rescue demonstrations, flea market, kids fire safety, and other attractions. Below are some photos from the event.

Our 1950 Mack pumper was awarded 1st place Fire Dept. owned apparatus while West End Hose Pottsville's 1928 Aherns-Fox was awarded Best Of Show. About 50 pieces of apparatus from both fire companies and private owners took place in the show. A live structure fire simulation was performed by some of the County's finest female firefighters, including our own Kathy Gavala and Bonnie Keff. Great Job Girls!

THE HEAT WAS ON!

On Saturday August 25th, West End participated in the 53rd Annual Schuylkill County Volunteer Firefighters Convention Parade hosted by the Valley View Fire Company in conjunction with their 100th Anniversary. Over 100 pieces of apparatus, along with numerous bands, floats, and marching units participated. All were trying to stay cool during the near 100 degree heat at parade time. At the end of the day, we were awarded 3 trophies. 1st place Fire Company Marching Unit Under 30 No Music, Rescue 993 for 1st Place Heavy Rescue, and Engine 5 for 1st Place Antique Apparatus. A grand time was had by all. We look forward to seeing everyone next year in Schuylkill Haven.
